I unzipped the zip file to c:php and followed the directions outlined in the install.txt file. Recently I upgraded my local development environment from running earlier version of XAMPP lite (1.6.x I guess) with PhpED 5.2, to XAMPP lite (1.7.0) with PhpED 5.6. After two failed attempts with PHP 4.4.2 and PHP 5.1.4, I discovered that I had to use PHP 5.2.0RC2-dev, which is the only version that runs on Apache 2.2.
